Alex and Emma

Alex and EmmaIn this digital age, it seems improbable to me that someone would hire a stenographer to dictate a novel to. And it also seems unlikely that someone would take a job that was presented as another. Anything goes in movies and I guess that's true here as well. This was a sweet, sort of corny, romantic story (note, I didn't say "comedy" ...I didn't find this all that funny, unfortunately). Two-for-one. And of course, with a happy, though improbable ending. One easily predicted within the first few minutes.

The Butterfly Effect

The Butterfly EffectThis was good, but depressing. If you could go back and change something in your past, would you? Things go from bad to worse when the main character (Evan) does this. Each reality ends up being worse than the previous one. And for a moment (when one particularly horrific reality came crashing back), I was glad this wasn't something I could do (especially with those results). Always wished I could change what went wrong and make it all work out. But maybe the consequences aren't worth it. In the end, for Evan, giving up what he wanted the most was the only way to make things right.

Maybe that's meant to be a moral for the rest of us. Hopefully not. Desire is one of the things that keeps up going. Unfortunately, so is pain. Perhaps the sacrifice is meant to prove we can still survive without something so important. Maybe. This was a depressing movie, but definitely interesting.

Tuesday

The Core

The CoreI think I expected too much from this one. The idea was interesting, but they left out some things (like, what exactly is "Destiny"? maybe I just missed that), and seemed to lapse into fantasyland through much of this. Granted, we can't expect a credible description of parts unknown, but a bit of realism and reality would've been good. Also, more scenes of what was happening to Earth while our Core crew was trying to save the world, would've made it better for me. I do like this enough to watch it again. It was entertaining enough.
